Visiting Graduate Researcher at UC Berkeley

I worked as a visiting graduate researcher/mentor at UC Berkeley during 2018 summer. As a part of a teaching team led by Dr. Euiyoung Kim and Prof. Alice Agogino, I participated in Design Innovation course as a teaching assistant.

Teaching was great.

The Design Innovation course was designed to help engineering and business students understand how to build a product from scratch. During the 12 sessions, students used 60 design methods (card sorting, personas, journey mapping, wireframing, focus groups, interviews and so on) to build a IoT device that ensures cybersecurity of the users. Since I have background in Human-Centered Design, and Usability Testings, I helped students design their experiments and mentored on which method to use for developments of specific device product.

Design Innovation Seminar

During the 12 sessions, I provided a 40minutes seminar on product evaluation methods that we use in University of Minnesota. Students were provided with criteria sheet to review the quality of their products, based on novelty (originality), usefulness, feasibility and marketability.

This was a great experience for me, since I get to share what I knew best. (Majority of the research I do is on product evaluation process). Small activity sessions were followed by this seminar.

Besides the teaching, I also mentored the Usability of Autonomous Vehicle that UC Berkeley’s BRAVO team under Prof. Alice Agogino, was building for Renault company. While attending the weekly meetings, I mentored through creation of user experience survey questions, as well as the construction of BRAVO website. At the end of the summer, we were able to build a mock-up UX/UI for the new autonomous vehicle. (Below is the picture of the exterior of the autonomous vehicle built by BRAVO team).

Other than teaching and mentoring, I also participated in researching. With the BEST lab under Prof. Alice Agogino, I led a seminar in Creativity and Innovation, and wrote 2 papers on Cybersecurity and Design Methods. These two papers were submitted to ICED ‘19 conference and ASME-DEC ‘19 conference and the results will come out in April, 2019.
