further research

With further research, we proposed a design with some salient features:

  1. Fits most larger smartphones, with the makeup palette including a base and cover. this makeup ensemble could be snapped onto the case allowing more mature users to dabble with different color combinations as per seasons.

  2. It would include singe, double tray configurations that could slide out much like the swiss army knife and would include necessary brushes to be used with appropriate makeup.

  3. The configuration would include a kickstand that could allow the user to rest the phone in portrait mode and use it as a mirror or just as a stand while watching videos or video chatting.

Final low-fidelity prototype

Final low-fidelity prototype

Once low-fidelity prototype was made, we conducted a focus group with a group of students (3 females 1 male, average age= 23, average makeup start age = 16). 1 hour free-discussion of the product led to a conclusion that a small-size makeup case is useful and needed, yet it is not necessary to keep the phone-case format. Below are the summary of quotes from the focus group:

Strength of the product:

  • size of the make-up case (fits into any purse)

  • stairway (or Swiss knife) opening that is more space-efficient than simple direction sliding

  • users have the freedom to change each level according to their needs (more lip gloss vs. more eyeshadow)

Downfall of the product:

  • phone-case part is not necessary (too thick for a phonecase)

  • White color is bad for make-up case (gets dirty too fast)

After focus group, the product idea was refined:
